Did You Find a Downtown Doctor?
DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — A reader who’s new to Downtown sent me an email asking what others have found when looking for a doctor. She’s newly from the westside, and would love to find someone a little more convenient to her new locale.
When I chose a doctor, I looked up the site for my insurance and made my choice based pretty much solely on geographic location. I ended up with a doctor in Little Tokyo, but can’t say I’ve ever been to see him.
Asking people about their doctor recommendations is a little tougher than asking their favorite restaurants. Lots of fun things like insurance coverage and specialties need to be considered. Still, there has to be some wisdom that can be shared here. What did you do for a doctor when you moved Downtown? Got one you really like?

Yep, Little Tokyo is the place for doctors downtown. I’ve been pleased to find many excellent doctors there – pediatrician (kids), podiatrist (wife’s feet), urologist (vasectomy); even a regular doctor for the annual check-up and little things.
The prenatal classes offered at the California Hospital are excellent. It wasn’t just a good instructor. The leadership of the unit was top-notch and unrecognized as far as I could tell. I can’t recommend them highly enough. We took the classes there for the first time my wife gave birth and the impact was huge. My wife’s labor was very complicated. But, the delivery was a piece of cake and those classes made all the difference.
We’ve used other doctors up at Hollywood Presbyterian for specialized procedures. When my wife was pregnant with our twins, we found an excellent specialist for that. We also found an excellent doctor up there when my wife had her gall bladder removed. (Yes, she’s been busy.) In this case, it was really luck of the draw with the insurance company.
We also used a fertility doctor over in Koreatown, who was very good.
I’m a Chiropractor with an office at 1127 Wilshire in City West , next to Good Samaritan Hospital. The 1127 Building houses many dentists, the laser eye center, USC Fertility center, Open MRI center, Unilab, Becka Medical Group, Horton & Convere Pharmacy, etc.
This fall I will be opening a new location in the Historic Core at Broadway & 7th on the second floor of the Broadway Exchange Lofts. The beautiful new facility will have Chiropractic, massage, aswell as a Medical Doctor & Gynecologist.
This fall the Historic Core will get a lot healthier.
These personal recommendations are very important. But to know whether the recommendations are useful you should say whether you’re in an HMO or a PPO, and if so, which one.
Dr. Tad in Little Tokyo?
It’s not in downtown, but the USC Medical Center is close – Lincoln Heights. Some depts also have offices on Bunker Hill. http://www.usc.edu/health/usccare/
The summer I got accepted to USC for grad school I was living in the Valley, and was due to get a yearly female checkup from a gynecologist and I decided to choose someone in Beverly Hills–not convenient from the Valley, but my husband and I planned on moving to Downtown to be closer to campus, and I hate switching doctors every year we move, so I took a gamble and went to a man named Dr. Jay Goldberg in the hopes of not switching, and I have to say he has been the best gynecologist I’ve ever had. I figure the visit is only once a year, and he’s totally worth going a little out of my way to Beverly Hills for a day. I know most women aren’t comfortable going to men for gynecology appointments, but seriously, he’s great.
As far as regular doctor visits are concerned, the USC medical center on Grand Ave is very convenient, especially since the C Dash drops off right there and loops back uptown.
I would also like to recommend the doctors of USC. If you have a PPO, they are conveniently located downtown at the executive health center. http://www.usc.edu/health/doctorsdowntown/. I believe all of the doctors at this location are faculty at the medical school. I personally go to the health sciences campus (next to county hospital). The facilities are great and I love my doctor there (also a faculty member).
The Health Sciences Campus is easy to get to during the week. From Union Station you can take a USC shuttle marked HSC. The shuttle is for USC affiliates, but they never ask for ID. There are also a number of buses that would get you there from Downtown in about 15 minutes.
I also recommend the USC center at 333 Hope St. It’s a nice, clean facility. They’re on my Blue Cross/Blue Shield PPO…
any suggestions for a dentist? just for regular teeth cleaning?
USC Exec health is excellent!!!
My dentist on Bunker Hill is Thomas Shinmoto at 800 W. 1st St, 2nd floor, at Bunker Hill Condominium. He’s a USC trained dentist and native Japanese speaker. I’ve used him for 14 years and he’s the best dds I’ve ever come across. Parking is free but you need to walk back from the lobby to your car to put a permit on your vehicle. arrgh!!!
i haven’t found a downtown doctor yet, but my dentist is in the pacific center (just west of pershing square).

i agree - USC at 333 Hope is excellent. went there for OBGYN, but they also have plain old regular appointments (for men and women) - even same day appts. i have BCBS.
Anyone know of a doctor open later than 5pm and/or on weekends?
i actually live on the westside but work downtown. all of my doctors are downtown. Good Sam has a great facility. If you are looking for a good women’s issues doc. dr. hill is the best. (213) 977-4190
No suggestions for a doctor but I’d really like to find a good veterinarian in the downtown area.
we’ve only been once, for an initial visit with our new puppy, but our vet is dr. edward j. simon of the l.a. central animal hospital. besides the location, we picked him based on previous recommendations on the newdowntown mailing list.

they don’t do emergency care. for that they refer to the eagle rock emergency pet clinic.
I have an HMO, and I head over to the White Medical Center.
And, for my dentist - Dude…Zen Dental. http://www.zendental.com/
He’s over in the Fashion District.

I chose a doctor at City of Angels Medical Center in Echo Park. Close to Downtown, a female (for some reason I have it in my head that they make better doctors – but no scientific evidence to back it up), though I have never had the occasion to see her. Choosing a doctor is daunting, so good luck.
