DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — This morning, U.S. Figure Skater Michelle Hanabusa hit the ice to open the L.A Kings Downtown On Ice at Pershing Square, now in it’s 10th year.
Downtown on Ice is open noon to 9pm Monday through Thursday, with hours pushed to 10am to 10pm over the weekend. It’s $6 for a one hour skate, plus $2 to rent the shoes. Skaters arriving via Metro, Metrolink or the Montabello Bus Lines get $1 off.
As for Hanabusa, 16, the National Showcase Champion led the skating demonstration this morning. She’s also quite the budding fashion designer, crafting her own outfits including the black one shown here. She comes Downtown from Palos Verdes to select special fabrics that fit criteria needed for competitive figure skating. I say that makes her an official Downtown artist.
With the potential laughs at our sun-dulled skating skills and the free WIFI, shall we have a Holiday Downtown Blogger Night at Downtown on Ice?
- Open everyday until January 21, 2008.
- 12pm to 9pm on Monday through Thursday
- 10am to 10pm on Friday, Saturdays and Sundays
- Special extended Holiday hours for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years will be announced via the website.
- Check the website for Free Youth Hockey Clinics.

I’d do the blogger night as long as you don’t make me skate !
Yes, but when will the Muppets on Ice perform there?
Can we at least get Smoochy to show up?
I can water ski and roller skate (not simultaneously, of course), but would be willing to to find out if those skills can keep me on my feet while on ice.
The key points for neophytes to bear in mind are:
1) Make sure your skates fit snugly and tightly laced up to support your ankles.
2) Bend your knees slightly.
3) Your weight needs to always be on the balls of your feet. Never your heels.
I’d encourage all of you to strap on some blades. Bring friends and family. Be sure to include small children. Even if you’re utterly inept, I can assure you a memorable time will be had by all.
yes, Bloggers on Ice! let’s do it!!!
“Bloggers on Ice!” Perfect. Thanks Shannon!
Of course I would love it. It would give me the chance to meet everybody. Just say when
yes Michelle Hannabusa is doing very well on the ice. I was her first coach. Starting her at the Culver City Ice arena when she was only 5 years old. She was so bright, and smart, and good! I wish her all the best!
