Safe Robbed at the Union Rescue Mission

If you didn’t see in the Times today, yesterday morning someone robbed a safe at the Union Rescue Mission and set a fire to cover their tracks. The mission was evacuated in the height of a cold night, and at least $20,000 or so in cash was taken. The money belonged to homeless individuals, and was being stored for them by the mission.

All I can say is that one would have to be really low to sink to stealing money from the homeless, and I certainly hope they find the person responsible.

I am headed over there to give a small amount to put back into their funds.

I think this is rotten and stinks.

I think many of us should go and do this. These people work hard to save their money to get out of their situation.

the day is coming soon when people, who prey on those in skid row, will no longer be able to do so. There is a solid and growing segment of the community that are getting stronger and more determined to set up groups to be proactive in protecting their community and all of the members in it.

I smell Karl Rove. Yeah, the RNC is low on funds, but this? Suggest contributions be made via money order - in memory of the soul of the POTUS. This way one will avoid being entered into a database and lessen the cutting of additional trees for 501-C-3 mailings. Yes, folks, this is off subject and way cynical, but I just learned that the Bush Administration is moving to resume open air testing of chemical and biological weapons (of mass destruction), outlawed when Nixon was in the White House.

Out of curiousity, why wasn’t this money in a bank? I hate that it was stolen but from what I heard, several people had over $1,000 that was being kept by the Mission. If you have that kind of cash, it needs to be in a bank for this exact reason. And I think the Mission should have said so. You stick $20,000 of cash in front of a lot of people and I wouldn’t be surprised if more than half the people would take it. I can’t help but feel this was foolish on everyone’s part.

Bank accounts require an ADDRESS (not to mention a Social Security number and photo identification).

Odds are this was an inside job as most safe robberies are. I doubt it will take the street long to cough up the culprit(s). S/he/they better hope the police catch them before the victims do and serve their own brand of justice.

Don - what an admirable thing to do. I am torn between donating now and at Christmas to individuals.

How will money be divided, as the money that was stolen was from individuals, according to radio reports. Will they just pool all the donations and use that to help pay back the victims? They did say on the radio that Union Mission would replace the stolen funds, so I guess we are just donating to Union Mission to help them in that effort?

It definitely sounds like an inside job - what a sick mofo to steal from the homeless.

According to view from a loft you can contact the Union Rescue Mission to make sure that your donation goes to those who had their money stolen.

Good point about needing an address to open a bank account - forgot about that.

Anyway, it looks like they already nabbed the guy who broke into the safe. Seems he was staying at the Mission until recently and left on bad terms. And he told everyone that he was good at breaking into things.
