CD9 Steps in to Save Caltrans Trees

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — Before those gathered could even take a vote at last night’s DLANC meeting on the proposed widening of 2nd street, it was made clear that Councilwoman Jan Perry is strongly opposed to the widening and will make sure that both lines of trees next to the Caltrans building stay in place. Her office also promised to look into parking concerns brought by residents of the Higgins Building.
Now that the six foot parkway has been saved, it’s time to get some landscaping back in there. The patchy grass currently in place isn’t quite cutting it from an aesthetic standpoint. DLANC President Russell Brown even suggested that perhaps the neighborhood council could adopt the space and enlist volunteers for upkeep.

Hopefully the on-street parking on 2nd between Los Angeles & Main is maintained. No more freewayization of LA!
Just because we and Jan are against the tree removal doesn’t mean it’s a done deal and the parkway saved. We still need to get the permit revoked.
Those Enginerds will have to find another 1970’s style project to destroy progress if they want to bust-a-nut with their calculations.
Its really sad to see this backward moving “progress” that consumes the entire civic-center area, isolating pedestrians and decreasing safety.
Aren’t there any officials that try to reduce the speed of cars through pedestrian areas, as they do most urban environments in the 21st century.
Adding greenery, two way streets, visual scale elements, actually greatly improve drivers’ focus and reduces accidents, even though there are more obstacles
