The Nokia Theatre as set up for Video Games Live back in October.

A couple weeks ago it was the Emmys’ making a move, then American Idol, and now ESPN’s ESPY Awards will be leaving Hollywood and the Kodak to head for Downtown’s Nokia Theatre. It’s not exactly a surprise of a move, given that the L.A. Live complex will include an ESPN broadcast facility and ESPNZone restaurant. The 2008 show, the first Downtown, will take place on July 20th.

Though relatively new, the Kodak has never had a reputation for being a venue in which it is easy to stage a show. AEG’s plans for the Nokia emphasized the load-in / load-out process, including the provision of space underneath the theatre where semis could pull in and park for the duration. Given the results, it would appear that their attention to detail has paid off.

Good thing that Cirque du Soleil is set to be at the Kodak on an extended basis, although that isn’t supposed to happen for another 2 years.

Since the Kodak Theater was funded in part with city money, it is best that the theater do as well as possible in generating revenue.
