Chado will occupy a former cafe space on the corner of the Japanese American National Museum.

After successful ventures in West Hollywood and Pasadena, L.A.’s popular Chado Tea Room is opening up a location Downtown. The small, local chain will be finding a home inside the Japanese American National Museum in Little Tokyo, and will celebrate its Grand Opening on June 8th at 1pm.

The Downtown tea room is slightly more upscale in its design than other locations and features a large outside patio along with a small seating area inside, which the owner hopes will attract celebrations like bridal showers, birthday parties and other small gatherings.

The Grand Opening celebration is slated to include a tea tasting presentation by James Norwood Pratt, author of The New Tea Lover’s Treasury, and Devan Shah, co-author of the Tea Dictionary, followed by a full afternoon tea with selected tea sandwiches, desserts and a pot of tea from Chado’s extensive menu. The day is $30 for museum members and $40 for non members.

Chado Tea Room is known for their enormous loose tea selection. They offer more than 300 different varieties, all of which can be purchased in their gift shop for home consumption. In addition to loose teas, visitors can purchase tea pots, tea cups and other high end merchandise.

The Downtown location will open at 11:30am, 7 days a week. The owners are still trying to determine a closing time. Even though Chado is inside the museum, the tea room is open to the public and doesn’t require museum admission.

This is very good for all the neighbors around Alameda and 1st and will be even better when the Gold Line extension is completed. I’ve always been impressed with the Chado in West Hollywood on 3rd with its amazing selection of teas and eats. This is great for downtown and great for what is now a stagnant corner…yippee! Oh and please stay open late!

I know. I am very excited. I have been going to the Weho Chado for years and think it will be a great addition to Downtown. I hope people try it. Although they will most likely close around 6 or 7 like their other locations, if we support it…who knows we could see if they could keep it open later. See you at Chado!

I consider this good news, not because I’m a tea aficionado. I tend to only drink tea when I’m ill. I’m hopeful this under-used space at First & Alameda can be put to good use. I’ve seen a couple of efforts come and go over the years. It is really a lovely space. Hopefully, the foot traffic from the Gold Line station will energiize the location. I’m encouraged by the renovation of Senor Fish across the street.
