Downtown Open House Headlines Packed Weekend of Events

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — Plastered all over Downtown are signs for this weekend’s Downtown L.A. Open House, but the first-year event is only one of the things taking place in the neighborhood.
Friday, Saturday and Sunday the Downtown Center BID is hosting the Downtown L.A. Open House. While the event is a successor-in-concept to DCBID’s past Downtown Living Weekends, this time the target expands past housing, with participants including restaurants, bars and retail.
The Open House website allows you to pull up a list of all the establishments participating over the weekend. There will also be an Info Center and Showcase set up at 7+Fig from 10am - 5pm on Saturday and Sunday, with the Info Center also open Friday from 5pm - 10pm.
Those out wandering Downtown may well happen upon some other events happening in the neighborhood this weekend.
The 2008 Feria del Libro: A Family Book Fair takes place on Saturday, with festivities centered around City Hall. Last year’s event was a great time, though unadvertised to Downtowners. The festival runs from 10am - 5pm, and features two stages of entertainment along with various literary booths and activities. Those looking to drive should take note that 1st street will be closed from Spring to Los Angeles, as will Main street from 2nd to Temple.
Heading north, Saturday is also the Fiesta de las Flores at Olvera Street. Though lacking in full details, the Calle Olvera site says:
The entire Monument, including the colorful Olvera Street Mexican Marketplace, will be decorated to create scenes from Los Angeles historic past. Various areas provide opportunities for both amateur and professional photographers alike.
On the south side of Downtown, the Dwell on Design conference will be wrapping up at the Convention Center. Conference sessions run Thursday and Friday, with the Exhibition open through Sunday.
Also at the Convention Center this weekend: Erotica LA, advertised as the “largest erotic expo in the U.S.” The 2007 event brought in 45,000 people, so this last one may just out-draw them all.
Comments
I wonder if the Downtown Center BID has ensured there is no downtown filming going on this weekend. I recall one such event where a large number of film shoots created quite a traffic mess, which probably didn’t contribute to their marketing message. Just wondering.
From my read of notifications and Public Works agendas, there are no filming closures this weekend (though there are a couple before Friday). I believe I recall Hal mentioning that he may have had a hand in that, but I can’t say that for sure.
we can only hope that the board of public works denies the shutdown of broadway that is being requested by abc studios for the night of art walk and the dlanc election.
filmla failed us, again.
Jim: Don’t expect Public Works to do anything on their own. If that’s still on the docket as of Thursday expect a story.
If you want BPW to deny a shutdown go to the hearing and object to the closure. They won’t grant it if there is a good reason.
Another weekend event, Sunday 6/8 starting at 11am at Clifton’s as the coda to Saturday’s “Visionary Hollywood” bus tour, tour host Erik Davis invites the public to a brunch gathering entitled “The Visionary State: An Open Discussion on California Spirituality.” Isis and Electricity Aquarian, members of The Source Family and authors of “The Source: The Untold Story of Father Yod, YaHoWha 13 and the Source Family” (Process Books) will be attending.
