In the Arts District, a crew hits the graffitti wall at 2nd and Vignes. One short block east is Sante Fe, where 2nd reaches the MTA yards and the Los Angeles River.
DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — On Saturday, a quick errand down 2nd Street reminded me of just how the streets of Downtown are no longer generic driveways in and out of monolithic parking lots. They connect neighborhoods and stories, and sometimes you forget how close those tales really are to each other.

Little Tokyo's Southern California Gardener's Federation relocated this grapefruit tree. It is over 100 years old and was once in the original Wolfskill groves.

Development took over the parking lot at 2nd and San Pedro, forcing last year's Tofu Festival to be held in the streets. This past week, the popular food fair's cancellation was announced, a sad but expected turn of events.

At the corners of Los Angeles and Main, construction is redoing the corner curbs. Unlike many sidewalk jobs, this one still allows some pedestrian travel.

A 1978 episode of "Lou Grant" shows Main Street, just south of 2nd, when it was considered part of Skid Row. The location here are a few steps away from St. Vibiana's.

At 2nd between Olive and Hill, the Upper Second Street project is rebuilding the slope that leads to Grand Ave. On the left is the Colburn School of Performing Arts.

I think this concept has a lot of merit. I think this concept could be done for practically any route in downtown. I’d wish their were more personal observations about the various details. No matter. I look forward to more of this kind of piece. Kudos.
It would be sad if the 2nd street tunnel were closed to cars.
OOh, I love these street stories too I’m constantly taking random “documentation” or “experience” photos of/in/about downtown. There is infinite amounts of cool and interesting tid bits about our center city - keep bringing this type of stuff on.
And I agree, closing 2nd street tunnel would be rather tragic.
Great story…makes me want to hop on my bike and trace your steps…
