Fred Eric’s Tiara Cafe (127 E. 9th) gets a nice write-up in the October 2008 issue of Westways magazine, a print publication from the Automobile Club of Southern California. The mag particularly highlights Tiara’s dinner hours, quieter after the Fashion District crowd heads home.

Even though the secret’s out for lunch, dinner is a different story. Things quiet down in the late afternoon, picking up a bit during the delightful champagne happy hour from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. (excluding Sunday and Monday), but after 7 p.m., the crowd dwindles to a few artists and local lofties, and Tiara becomes a subdued, almost romantic spot, great for catching up with friends or getting a bite before or after an event at Staples Center, the Orpheum, or even the Music Center.

A variety of menu items get rave reviews. The full write-up can be found on the Westways website (though you may have to enter your zip code first).

Author Colleen Dunn Bates also notes the “little restaurant row” taking place on 9th, particularly giving a call out to Brazilian eatery Wood Spoon.

While Tiara’s website is hopelessly bare, the listing for the restaurant on Yelp shows dinner hours from 5:30pm - 10pm seven days. Probably best to call first and confirm.

Fred makes a great vegetarian pizza with goat cheese. A little pricey but worth it for a nice dinner.

The bubble bread is amazing. I love this place and the waiters are kind, knowledgeable and very accomodating. I hope this place becomes a permanent downtown establishment. They have great breakfast options too!

I agree with the romantic feel of the place. Went for last Valentine’s day. 6 course meal special was wonderful. Included with a special homemade take home menu (with lace, hearts, and flip pages describing the various courses). Meal included champayne (sp?) flutes. On special occasions when you can’t get a table anywhere, go to Tiara, walk right in, get served right away, with special attention, great food, and wonderful ambiance.
