DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — The Wal-Mart Foundation today announced a $150,000 donation to Homeboy Industries, the Downtown organization dedicated to helping former gang members through jobs and services. The gift was presented this morning at Homeboy's Chinatown headquarters.
Homeboy opened its Chinatown in October of 2007, bringing together several of its formerly spread-out businesses. The organization, founded by Father Greg Boyle, operates the Homeboy Bakery, Homeboy Silkscreen, Homeboy Maintenance and the Homegirl Cafe.
Nonprofits have had increased difficulty maintaining their funding level during the current economic crisis, in which some foundations have simply stopped issuing funding. A recent Downtown News article spoke of the trouble Downtown service organizations were having with raising funds.
