Last June, Shane Goldsmith and Monica Granados said their vows on the steps of City Hall in a ceremony officiated by Council President Eric Garcetti. It was Downtown's first same-sex ceremony, a day after the marriages were made legal.

Roots of Equality, a gay-rights group that formed against the passing of Prop 8 during the fall, is holding a "kiss-in" on the steps of City Hall on Saturday.

Tom DeSimone, one of Roots of Equality's organizers, said that the event was to "spread a message of love."

Couples - gay and straight - will gather on the steps of City Hall on Valentine's Day 2pm, and at 2:30... kiss!

"A lot of people were very hurt after Prop 8," said Teresa Wang, another organizer, "so this is part of the healing process."

Wang also emphasized the need to keep the same-sex marriage movement in the public eye. "If you don't like us, you're going to vote against each other ... it doesn't matter, we're still going to love each other, we're still going to kiss each other," she said.

As of Tuesday morning, over 250 people had RSVPed via the event's Facebook page, but organizers are hoping for even more attendees.

Both DeSimone and Wang are downtown residents, as well.

"There's a large gay community in the downtown area," DeSimone said. "I think we're just starting to see what downtown can do, in terms of community organizing," Wang added.

Many gay activists were shocked and disheartened at the outcome of Prop 8, which banned gay marriage in California. Lawsuits on both sides - to overturn the proposition and to nullify any current same-sex marriages - are making their way through the courts.

The State Supreme Court will hear arguments on the validity of the proposition on March 5, and ruling will be due within the following 90 days.
