A Look at May Day Traffic

5:30pm Traffic on May 1, 2009 LADOT

On May 1, 2009, six separate immigration marches passed through Downtown Los Angeles, lasting from early afternoon into the evening rush hour. A sequence of images from LADOT's live traffic site shows the impact the resulting street closures had on traffic across Downtown.

Images were gathered from http://trafficinfo.lacity.org/. A view of Downtown traffic was downloaded each minute, and the resulting files were stitched together into a video sequence.

The first march got underway soon after 1pm, with the last closures affecting 1st and Broadway past 5pm.

Before the last march had even ended, emails were already traveling between Downtown stakeholders and Council offices asking for a new look into the way march permits and closures are granted.

Very kool with the time-lapse visual aid

Technology can be so fun. Neat graphically.

That visual really makes the impact of it clear. Fascinating! Again, again :)

On a more serious note: a lot of trouble to a lot of folks for a day of low-attendance marches. I do hope this is reconsidered in the future.
