LAPD Apprehends Jewelry Theft Suspect After Standoff Near Pershing Square
DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — UPDATE (3:15pm) — The suspect was taken into custody after having evaded pursuing officers by hiding in an alcove of the AT&T office on Olive street.
One of three suspects in a jewelry theft is still loose this hour, and LAPD has set up a perimeter around the Pershing Square area. As of 2:40pm, LAPD Captain Daryl Russell said that the department believes it knows the identity and location of that suspect, and officers are preparing to move in.
The other two suspects were taken into custody after a traffic stop that took place on Hill street at roughly 1pm. LAPD does not believe that the third suspect is still in the park.
Traffic around the perimeter of the park is severely impacted, with 5th and 6th streets closed along with Olive and Hill.
LAPD officers closed off Pershing Square this afternoon for the pursuit, but no longer believe the suspect is in the park. Russell says that LAPD identified the third suspect from security cameras.
Soon after 1pm, An email report by reader Dennis Smith said that the vehicle's driver had been apprehended and that the search was for a passenger. The department at the time could not confirm or deny that report.
Via twitter, reader Gayle Montgomery said that the situation had led to an interesting DASH ride. "B Dash was completely rerouted, our doors were partially locked and guarded, and there were cops all over," she wrote.
