Langers Deli Ed Fuentes

|VIDEO| Ever since the Red Line opened in 1993, Norm Langer has never shied away from crediting the subway for saving his family’s deli. While Langer's is located adjacent to MacArthur Park, its proximity to the first subway stop outside of Downtown makes it just a few steps away from 7th and Figueroa or the Civic Center.

On Wednesday, author David Sax held a reading and nosh for his book “Save the Deli,” in which he declares that the nation's finest pastrami sandwich can be found at Langer's Delicatessen-Restaurant.

The opening act for the Sax roadshow was Willard Morgan, known as "Jelvis, the Jewish Elvis."

Langer's is great. Well worth the $1.25 ride. Caveat: they close by mid-afternoon, so don't plan on it for dinner.

When the " Save the Deli " article appeared in the L.A. Times, naming Langers and others as the best, I emailed the article to my New York friends.

One responded ... " You already have Dudamel, please don't take our deli's too "

Don't you love it ?

As a former New Yorker, I would always pooh pooh the LA delis until I tried Langers. As a new downtowner, I tried langers about a year ago and could not believe how great their corned beef is too!!! The carnegie in NY used to be my all time favorite. I went back last month to the carnegie and the corned beef that I compared it to was Langers-- which was fresh in my mind and sorry to admit, now my favorite over the Carnegie. Since I am in the corner of northern downtown, I drive and get free one hour parking in their own security lot. They also have great crinkle cut fries and they make their own cream soda. As a side note, I took my parents to Langers recently and it was one of the highlights of their trip.

Langer's beats Katz's in my own survey of American pastrami.
