CRA Board Approves $5 Million for Streetcar

The Downtown streetcar got its first big infusion of cash today, as the Commissioners of the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) unanimously voted to approve a budget that allocates $5 million toward the project.
CRA staff also presented the board with a potential budget and proposed funding sources for the project, which is estimated to cost $90 million and could be up and running in 2014. — Continued Inside...

The Downtown Streetcar project could get a major boost on Thursday, when the board of the Community Redevelopment Agency considers programming $5 million in funding toward the project this fiscal year. If approved, the funding would provide seed money for engineering and construction activities.

The concept of a Downtown streetcar took another step forward Friday, as the Bringing Back Broadway Trustees voted to create LA Streetcar, Inc. The organization would be a sole purpose non-profit that would design, build and operate a streetcar system Downtown.

That larger-than-expected crowd included Downtown residents, business and property owners along with representatives from Metro and an array of city departments. Those who don’t work or are able to take a five hour lunch are invited to attend an “Interactive Planning Workshop on the Broadway Streetcar” this Thursday. The free event runs from 10am to 2:30pm, and is being held at the New LATC.
Streetcar Added to Council's Transportation Sales Tax Motion

On Friday, the City Council will consider a motion in support of Metro’s proposed half-cent sales tax for transportation projects, and will submit to Metro a list of projects that it believes should be specifically named for funding. A late entry to the list is the Downtown streetcar, added at the urging of Councilman Jose Huizar.
